It's hard to believe that I have not blogged for a few months. Such is my life, so busy and full, but I am feeling the need to empty my thoughts more. That is why I have this blog. Oh, and the other reason is that I am an introvert and still feel the need to communicate!
On September 1st I began a 30 day exercise challenge. Since I injured my achilles a year and a half ago I have become somewhat lazy on that front. I set out to walk outdoors or on the elliptical machine for a minimum of 20 per day.
Well, the results are in! Out of the 30 days I ended up with 24 completed and 6 that I did not walk. The majority of the failed days were in the last week or so as I caught a head cold and used it as an excuse.
I discovered from my efforts this past month that I am a total procrastinator (I already knew that) and most days I walked on the elliptical between 7 and 8 pm! There were a few things that I liked about exercising that late in the day. I kept the room dark and listened to music with my headphones. It was kind of nice. I also probably burned off some of my dinner calories.
However, my mind still says that I should go for walks outdoors as much as possible--in the fresh air and sunshine.
When I set out in the beginning of September I had a few people ask if I was going to count steps, as fit bitting is now all the rage. I do not count steps. I do see the advantage of it in that it reminds people to move more and sit less. But what I am after are the benefits of bumping my heart rate up for 20 + minutes at a time.
October is a beautiful month to get out and walk before winter sets in. Who wants to join me?

setting small goals
i started tracking my eating on www.sparkpeople.com about 4 weeks ago. at first i just tracked and didn't try really hard to cut back. i also purposed to exercise a bit more since i had gotten a little lazy over the winter.
after two weeks my weight was the same. and i was still logging on and keeping track of my food. thats an achievement!!
so on the third week i decided to start setting little goals. on week three i set 2 goals.
1. keep my breakfast calories at 300
2. up my walking time to 50 minutes 5 times a week.
the results are in: i lost 2 lbs this past week---great!!!!
so for week four i added another goal: the keep my snack calories at 300. this is going to be a tough one. i am an evening snacker!!!! so i added something else to this goal: i have to be DONE eating by 7 pm. so it looks like i should be going to bed earlier.
setting small goals and trying to get them to become habit is my purpose. i probably will stick with these goals without making more for a few weeks.
so to summarize
breakfast 300 calories
snacks 300 calories total
walk 50 min. 5x week
no food after 7 pm.
i have been taking the turmeric golden paste for a week now instead of ibuprofen (for sciatica and all around aches and pains)
my observations: while i'm not pain free, i am also not 25 years old. so some aches and pains are normal and to be expected. however i really do feel like it has helped with the sciatica pain in my leg. the burning pain when i walk is gone! i have also noticed that i'm in a better mood. this could just be from the eating right and exercising, but the turmeric is supposed to be helpful in that respect also.
soooo, i'm going to continue to take it.
there is one more kind of weird thing that i have also decided to do. i have decided to not get my haircut until i reach my goal weight. its a control issue with me.

The house always seems extra calm and quiet after taking a precious little boy home. We had ethan overnight and brought him home around 5 pm. He is so funny and sweet. He has become very easy and enjoyable to have stay over. Joe didn't stay the night this week. Meghan is weaning him off his pacifier ( he is 2 1/2) so we decided to wait until this is accomplished. So far, so good!
So far february in maine has been cold and snowy. The past week we've been getting storms every other day it seems.
I've been setting a weekly goal of 10 miles for my walking, but i haven't been hitting it. So far this week i've made it to 5 miles! Weight loss goals are suffering too- my motivation is low :(
I switched to some homemade deodorant a couple weeks ago and so far i like it! Today i made some shampoo and used it this evening-it smells very pepperminty! We have been trying to cut down on the amount of chemicals we are using. I'm going to make some air freshener spray next.
